Stop Emerald Ash Borer from Destroying Your Trees
Prevent the Serious Threat to Iowa Ash Trees
What is it?
- An exotic wood boring beetle that kills North American ash trees
- Metallic green in color, its slender body measures 1/2 inch in length and 1/8 inch wide
Where did it come from?
- First detected in 2002 in Michigan
- This pest was prbablyintroduced at least 10 years before it was discovered, in wood creating, pallets or similar packaging material imported from Asia
What does it do?
- EAB larvae feed in S-shaped tunnels on the inner bark of the tree called phloem
- These tunnels the larvae create effect the trees ability to transport nutrients and water within the tree
- This causes branches and eventually the entire tree to die
- All true ashes such as green, white, and black are susceptible to EAB
Is my tree infested with EAB?
- Is (or did) the ash tree die from the top down? Are branches dying or dead only at the top? Figure 1
- Does the tree have "water" sprouts on the trunk below dead branches? Figure 1
- Do the leaflets have portions that have been eaten along the edge? Figure 2
- Have you noticed woodpecker damage on the tree trunk? Figure 3
- Do you find 1/8 inch wide "D-shaped" holes in the bark? Figure 4
- Do you find snaking or S-shaped tunnels underneath loose bark on the trunk or large branches? Figure 5
Management and prevention solutions
- Systemic insecticides are the products choice when managing EAB
- These chemicals transport the insecticide within the vascular system of the tree from the roots, through the tree to the leaves
- Tree injection is the preferred choice by QA Lawn & Pest
- Absorbed and distributed throughout the tree quicker than other treatments
- Reduce hazards such as chemical drift, chemical exposure on soil surface and exposure to non-target species
- Depending on the size of tree, a number of holes will be drilled at the base of the tree where the chemical will be injected and absorbed
- This will provide your tree with 2 years of protection from EAB
